Shreveport Man Arrested After Attempting to Take Firearm from Officer During Rape Investigation

Shreveport Police Sex Crimes detectives were executing a search warrant on the 2100 block of Coty Street in connection with a second-degree rape investigation when Izayah Benson, 18, was detained after being identified as matching the description provided by the victim. During the detention, Benson allegedly attempted to take a firearm from one of the officers, physically resisting as multiple officers worked to take him into custody. No officers were injured. Benson was arrested and booked at the Caddo Correctional Center. SPD said the rape investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may follow.

The attorney for State Rep. Michael Melerine says Melerine had just come from a legislative committee meeting in Baton Rouge before his SUV was found in a ditch in Caddo Parish in July. Records confirm Melerine appeared at the committee meeting prior to the incident. The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing. Melerine serves a Bossier Parish-area district in the Louisiana House of Representatives.
Plain Dealing Shooting Victim Identified; Domestic Dispute Suspected

The Bossier Parish Coroner’s Office has identified the man found shot and killed near Plain Dealing in August as Victor Joseph Martinez, 26, of Shreveport. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene on Aug. 23 at 397 Lake Road. A second person was transported to a local hospital with injuries. Preliminary findings suggest the incident originated as a domestic dispute in Caddo Parish before crossing into Bossier Parish. The manner of death remains undetermined.
