In Search of Good Food: just ask the Dude

I was having a conversation with some friends a few weeks ago. They mentioned that all the places I had written about were in Shreveport or Bossier, however the Shreveport-Bossier Journal covers all of Caddo and Bossier parishes. That got me thinking and I began to look around for some places in the ‘suburbs’ so to speak, for some good food.

I had seen some references to Dude with Food, 500 South Elm Street, Haughton, in the past and figured I’d try to go there during the high school soccer season when I’d likely be in Haughton. My day job had me in Minden one day last week, and I realized it was the perfect time to stop in and give Dude’s a try.

Dude’s does not have a dining room per se, but does have outdoor seating. I can definitely see myself sitting there, enjoying their food when the weather is a little less hot and sticky, but on this visit, I took my food to go.

Dude’s has a menu with many versions of burgers, tacos and burritos, and they also run a weekly specialty sandwich to expand what everyone can enjoy. Mrs. Dude does all the baking of their bread and all the desserts that are available to have.

I started with last week’s special, A hot Turkey Sandwich on freshly baked Beer Sourdough Bread, made with sweet onions and sharp cheddar cheese. The turkey came with Pepper Jack cheese, bacon, sauteed red onions, spicy mustard and mayo, homemade fries and a drink.

This was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The bread was so flavorful, with all the ingredients working perfectly together, and I wanted more. That was after I gave half of it to my mother, as she lives on my way back to the office.

She also raved about the sandwich. She couldn’t quite figure out what elevated the sandwich so much until I told her about the bread. The homemade fries were well made and added to the sandwich instead of just being a side.

I could never be on a Keto diet, however Dude’s has a Keto fried cheeseburger wrap that seemed interesting, so I ordered it. If everything Keto was as good as that cheeseburger, I’d sign up. There was a nice texture to the lettuce wrap that added a nice layer to the burger. It being fried made the burger evenly cooked and something I could eat every week.

It came in four pieces. I saved a couple for lunch the next day, and it was just as good. Not many burgers can say that.

I always love a good pulled pork sandwich, when I saw it on the menu, somehow I went on auto pilot and ordered it. After the eating all I had to do, I could only have a few bites of the pulled pork sandwich, which was overstuffed with some tender BBQ pulled pork. It made for a great snack that night.

With all that food, I almost said no to the freshly made desserts, until I looked at the Triple Threat. It’s 2 OG chocolate chip cookies rolled in crushed pecans and toffee, stuffed with a chocolate ganache filling, and topped with white chocolate drizzle and sea salt. It called my name and I answered the call.

That dessert is even better than the description, if that’s even possible. When you get one, understand you will not be sharing it, that I can promise you.
