In weekend college basketball action involving local teams, LSU Shreveport took a pair of big wins at Louisiana Christian to stay perfect early in Red River Athletic Conference play, while Bossier Parish Community College fell in overtime and Centenary’s teams took lopsided road losses.
LSU Shreveport men 78, LCU 57: In Pineville Saturday afternoon, the Pilots pulled away after halftime to raise their conference record to 5-0 and overall mark to 7-3.
Khi Wallace led the Pilots with 17 points and 13 rebounds, marking his seventh double-double of the season. Emareyon McDonald contributed 17 points, including 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range, and had four assists. Devonte Austi added 13 points and three steals while Hayden Brittingham contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds, along with two blocks and Thaddeus Johnson scored 11.
LSUS outscored Louisiana Christian (1-9, 0-4) by 12 in the final period. The Pilots play tonight against Florida Memorial in Waxhachie, Texas.
LSUS women 85, LCU 49: The Pilots scored the first 14 points and led 20-6 after one quarter and 44-13 at the half in the rout at H.O. West Fieldhouse in Pineville.
Selma Markisic led LSU with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Paula Gonzales Herrero finished with 21 points, three rebounds, three steals, two assists, and two blocks, while Sami Slusarek added 19 points and six rebounds.
LSUS will host the University of the Southwest at The Dock on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
Angelina CC 87, Bossier Parish 79 (OT): Despite a 34-point performance from Tony Montgomery, the Cavaliers were outlasted Saturday at Billy Montgomery Gym.
Angelina jumped ahead 16-2 but BPCC, with four freshmen starters, rallied for a 30-29 lead at the half. The visitors outscored the Cavs 16-8 in overtime.
“We came up short in overtime but I love the fight of our team,” said BPCC’s first-year coach, Jeff Moore. “We had our chances in regulation and overtime to get it done but it wasn’t our best shooting night and we got pounded again on the boards by a relentless rebounding team. We have to cut down on our turnovers and that falls on me.”
Montgomery hit 9 of 18 shots (4-9 on 3’s) and drained 12 of 15 free throws. Zequan Lewis added 11 points for BPCC.
“I’m looking forward to our return to the court in January as we sit in the middle of our league at 2-2 with a lot of games to go,” said Moore. “We will turn the corner. I believe in this team – they fight!”
Howard Payne men 103, Centenary 82 – The Gents (1-7) trailed the Yellow Jackets (9-3) 52-41 at halftime and were outscored by 10 in the second half.
Centenary senior guard Craig Collier led all scorers with 28 points. Freshman Jaden Braden added a season-high 17 while senior Quentin Beverly contributed 13.
The Gents return to action Friday at home against Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 in the Gold Dome.
Howard Payne women 85, Centenary 40: The Ladies (2-7) fell behind the Yellow Jackets (5-6) 35-22 at halftime, then were outscored 50-18.
Seven points from Amiyah Barrow paced the Ladies, who don’t play again until Jan. 2 against LeTourneau at home in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
