SHERMAN, Texas – The Centenary football team returns to the field following a bye week as the Gents are on the road Saturday to face the Austin College ‘Roos with kickoff set for 6 o’clock at Jerry E. Apple Stadium.

The Gents (0-2) are 0-1 on the road this season while the ‘Roos (0-2) are 0-1 at home. Centenary had a bye last weekend after falling at home 50-33 to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers which was preceded by a season-opening loss (56-14) at Millsaps College on Sept. 6.

Austin College lost at home to Kalamazoo College 14-10 in its season opener and then fell 31-17 at Rhodes College in its second game. Centenary swept the season series over Austin College last season, 36-17 in Sherman for its first win in its return to the sport, and 41-21 in Shreveport.

“The Gents are focused on getting better each week and correcting the mistakes from prior games,” said head coach Byron Dawson. “Progress is a process, and our players are learning how to compete for four quarters while continuing to grow together.

“Austin is a well-coached team with good players. We must bring our ‘A’ game on Saturday. We are determined to bring energy, discipline, and improvement on the road.”

The Gents are averaging 402.5 yards per game of total offense (335.0 passing and 67.5 rushing) and scoring 23.5 per game.

Vance Feuerbacher etched his name into the SCAC record book against ETBU on Sept. 20 as he passed for 500 yards, which is the third-most yards all-time in a single game for a SCAC quarterback in conference history.

Feuerbacher, named the SCAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, completed 31 of 48 passes and threw for five touchdowns. The junior also scored on a two-point conversion run and punted and kicked off.

The single-game record for passing yards is 513 by Rhodes College’s Craig Solomon versus Principia on Nov. 4, 1978 and the No. 2 mark is 506 yards by Trinity University’s Mike Burton against West Maryland on Nov. 21, 1998.

Freshman defensive back T.J. Ranson leads the Gents with 18 total tackles (8 solo) and has 2 ½ tackles for lost yards.

Centenary begins Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Saturday, Oct. 11 at home versus Texas Lutheran. On Oct. 18 the Gents are at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., and they close the month of October at home versus McMurry for a conference contest on Oct. 25.

Centenary will face Hendrix College on Nov. 1 in Conway, Ark., then comes back home on Nov. 8 to face Austin College again to close the regular season.

Saturday’s meeting between the Gents and ‘Roos does not count as a conference contest, just the second meeting in Shreveport.
