It seems like every year now Calvary Baptist Academy will have some quality recruits in the Cavaliers’ senior class. One of my favorites: I remember going back a few years cornerback Greedy Williams signed with LSU and had a great career in Baton Rouge that carried him into the NFL.
Just last year the no-doubters were James Simon, the running back who chose Texas, and offensive lineman Devin Harper, who picked Ole Miss. They were the best of a bumper crop that signed with Division I programs from the FBS and FCS levels. Others found opportunities at smaller schools.
For all the big-time recruits out of Rodney Guin’s program at CBA, there are still some sleepers every year that just need a shot in a D-I college. The biggest sleeper I can remember that I saw play at Calvary Baptist signed with Air Force.
Weston Steelhammer ended up being on the Thorpe List in college and was a big time player for the Falcons. But he wasn’t highly recruited coming out of Calvary Baptist as a safety. He was a big miss for a lot of schools.
This year Calvary Baptist has another impressive senior class but what I call a sleeper group overall. Nobody is sleeping on the Cavaliers’ best player, but cornerback/receiver Braylun Huglon is a junior and is already getting lots of attention in the Class of 2027.
The headliner among Calvary’s seniors is offensive lineman Hunter Davis, a 6-3, 285-pound mauler. He moves people. At this stage, Davis has been offered by two good Division II teams, Ouachita Baptist and Arkansas Tech, and he has been talking to Stephen F. Austin of the FCS Southland Conference.
I think Davis can be a starter in college at a high level because he is strong and has good enough feet to play tackle or guard.
Then there’s safety Luke Miller who is 6-0, 195 pounds and brings it as a hitter. He is a football player like his dad Mark Miller, who played at Evangel Christian High School back in the day, and is an assistant coach on the Calvary football staff. Luke’s brother Cole Miller also played recently for Calvary Baptist and was a big time high school football player as a linebacker.
I believe Luke could be like Steelhammer, under the radar nationally but a prospect who has the football IQ and toughness to start and stand out for many D-I programs.
There are other Cavaliers’ seniors who I hope get the opportunity to become college football players. WR Brent Bigelow (6-1, 180) looks like a big-time sleeper who has really good hands and good speed, and runs good routes.
Kicker Tshehaye “Ty” Knight (5-11, 160) has a really good leg and he told me if he doesn’t get a shot at college football, he wants to be a pilot one day and will go to aviation school.
There’s a couple defensive standouts for the Cavs I like. Linebacker Justin Reeves (6-0, 220) would be a really good middle linebacker at the next level. He’s a tough kid and good tackler, and a leader. Another big time leader is David Weeks (6-1, 220) who has played tackle, end and some linebacker. Given a chance I think he could be a MLB in college at some level, and a good one.
This I do know. Calvary kids know how to win, how to work, and they are extremely well coached by Guin and his excellent staff. That staff develops players, gets the most out of them, and puts the best guys in positions to make the most impact.
