After shaking up the District 1-5A status quo last Friday with a 51-49 win over two-time reigning champion Airline, the Evangel Eagles line up against another team hoping to adjust the pecking order.

Evangel (3-1 overall, 3-0 in district) goes to Independence Stadium tonight to meet a Huntington team (2-2, 2-1) that has won its last two, scoring a combined 102 points under first-year head coach John Simon, a longtime college assistant.

The Raiders are overcoming the graduation of 36 seniors and adjusting to the coaching change. They handled business at Haughton last week, 42-28, a week after a 59-57 win at Indy over Benton.

The game showcases the two most productive passers locally through four weeks of play: Evangel junior Peyton “Pop” Houston with 1,462 yards (80-122-3, 11 touchdowns) and Huntington senior transfer Justin Whitaker with 1,102 yards (74-115-1, 14 TDs).

Evangel’s deep receiving corps is topped by Charley Abraham with 30 catches for 506 yards and a pair of scores. Jayden White is Whitaker’s top target (20 catches, 308 yards, three TDs).
