A record 528 young men and women from high schools throughout Louisiana spent an enjoyable day learning about the opportunities offered by a career in the sciences at Northwestern State University’s annual STEM Day Friday, February 7. The event featured hands on demonstrations and fun activities from each of NSU’s science and math departments. From tarantulas and snakes to Rubik’s Cubes, computer simulated autopsies, EKGs and drones, there were plenty of activities to spark young minds’ interest in the sciences at NSU.

In addition to the fun activities, a group of over 30 STEM Ambassodors guided the student groups throughout the day. These accomplished young men and women are current science students at NSU and represent a wide variety of majors and career ambitions. From Nursing to Pre-Meds and allied health to future researchers and scientists, the STEM Ambassadors served as examples of what hard work can accomplish.

Caddo parish was ably represented by young men and women from Southwood, Northwood, Captain Shreve and Booker T, Washington High Schools. The large number of students from Caddo schools attending this event is a direct reflection of the their teachers’ dedication and desire to expose their students to opportunities after they graduate.
