A home sweep for the Bossier Parish Community College baseball team coupled with a road win Saturday by the Cavaliers’ basketball team for an upbeat weekend for BPCC fans.
BASKETBALL: BPCC pulled out a 70-66 Region IV victory Saturday afternoon at Coastal Bend College. The Cavs (15-8 overall 7-8 in region play) won for the third time in five starts and swept the season series.
Charles Onana led the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Braylan McNeal and Farvens Ulysse each added 13 for BPCC, which is home twice this week: Wednesday at 5:30 against Kilgore JC, and Saturday at 2 vs. Trinity JC in Billy Montgomery Gym.
BASEBALL: The Cavaliers swept Richland College 4-3, 15-5 and 6-0, raising their record to 5-1 through the first two weekends of the season.
The Cavaliers took the lead late in Game 1 against the Thunderducks. Clutch hitting by Dylan Biddick gave the Cavs the lead in the seventh inning. Biddick collected three hits, including a home run.
Another bright spot at the plate for BPCC was centerfielder Jacob Poletto whose two hits featured a triple.
Former Minden standout Brody Bower pitched four effective innings in relief, allowing four hits, one run, walked one and struck out six. Zander Bretza closed the game with two scoreless innings of work, fanning two.
Opening a Saturday twinbill, Bossier Parish collected 12 hits and rolled as Tyrus Hall, Brandon Levy and James Reina led the offense. Hall, a West Virginia signee, hit two homers that drove in three.
The Cavs took a lead in the second inning on Parker Gwyn’s single and a three-run homer from Reina, their catcher. In the fourth inning Hunter Fontenot delivered a two-RBI double in the fourth. Two innings later, Poletto singled driving in two runs and Hall cracked a two-run homer while Levy, who had three hits, singled in a run.
Left-hander Cameron Williams started and did not allow an earned run in three innings as he struck out four to begin the rout of the Thunderducks.
Three BPCC pitchers combined to throw a shutout in the final game of the series. Ben Mckinnon got the start and went five innings, not allowing a hit or a run while striking out eight. Garett Blanchard went three innings, scattering three hits with three strikeouts. Levy, the former Parkway star, closed the game with a strikeout in his one inning of work.
Daniel Pinkerton had three hits, including a home run. Hall remained hot, collecting three hits. Hayden Stringfellow broke the game open with a two-run double in the seventh inning.
The Cavs are back in action Thursday at home against SAU-Tech at 3 p.m.
