The Centenary men’s basketball team got 20-point production from Quentin Beverly and Jakobi Greenleaf and cruised to a 92-65 victory over the University of Dallas Crusaders on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
It capped a sweep for Centenary after the Ladies dumped Dallas in Sunday’s opener.
Centenary has another RRAC doubleheader at home Tuesday night against Austin College, then is home again next weekend to wrap up a four-game homestand.
The Gents (4-8, 2-1 SCAC) won for the third time in four games and posted their largest margin of victory this season and largest ironically since defeating the Crusaders at home last season, 97-64. Dallas fell to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play.
Centenary, which scored a season high in points, was impressive in all facets offensively on Sunday as the Maroon and White finished 29-59 from the floor (49.2 percent) and particularly shot the ball well from long range, finishing 12-28 beyond the arc for 43 percent. The Gents also went 22-25 at the free-throw line and turned the ball over a season-low six times.
The Gents tallied a season-high 18 steals, 11 assists, and blocked one shot. Centenary won the battle inside, getting 30 points in the paint to Dallas’ 10, and finished with a whopping 43-2 edge in points off of turnovers.
Centenary led 45-25 at halftime after making six treys, only turning the ball over four times, and forcing 14 Dallas turnovers.
Beverly continued his torrid offensive output as he scored a game-high 25 points and was one of four Gents in double figures. Greenleaf posted a season-high 23, Craig Collier had 19, and Jalen Ned scored 15.
LADIES 74, DALLAS 61: Centenary raced out to a 17-0 lead and snapped an eight-game skid behind 26 points, a season best, and 19 rebounds by freshman Shyanne Phillips.
The Ladies (2-9, 1-2 SCAC) won for the first time this season at home, improving to 1-4 on their home court. The Crusaders dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in SCAC play.
Phillips was 11-17 from the floor and 4-4 at the free-throw line in 30 minutes with a blocked shot and a steal. Phillips entered Sunday’s action as the conference’s third-leading rebounder, tied for fifth in free throw aim, and ranked in the top 20 in scoring. She has now reached double figures six times this season and has recorded four double-doubles.
Freshman Nevaeh Rivera scored 16 and grabbed six rebounds and dished out a team-leading five assists and had three steals. Rivera reached double figures for the sixth time this season.
