LSUS assistant professor granted travel sponsorship for prestigious economics conference
Dr. Reshad Osmani, an assistant professor at LSUS, has secured a travel grant from the American Economic Association. These grants, dedicated to underrepresented minorities in the field, support junior faculty members traditionally less represented in economics.
The grant extends financial aid for faculty attendance at the annual Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) meeting in January. Dr. Osmani highlighted the significance of this event, stating that it brings together multiple associations, including the American Economic Association and the American Finance Association, serving as a vital platform for researchers, academics, and professionals. It facilitates the exchange of ideas, discussions on research, and valuable networking opportunities.
Osmani, who joined LSUS in 2022 as a tenure track assistant professor, teaches economics within the Master of Health Administration program. As a health economist, his focus revolves around generating data-centric scholarship to influence public policy and practice. His scholarly contributions span various topics, including the impact of race and ethnicity on the job market outcomes of cancer survivors.
Expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming ASSA meeting, Osmani emphasized its importance in exploring new empirical and theoretical advancements in health economics research. Drawing from his background as a Fulbright scholar with extensive international exposure, he underlined the challenges faced by foreign scholars and underrepresented minorities. He sees the ASSA meeting as an invaluable opportunity to address these challenges effectively.
Osmani’s academic journey includes a master’s degree in health economics and healthcare management from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, followed by master’s and doctorate degrees in economics from the University of Memphis, known for its diverse faculty.
Regarding the significance of minority representation in such gatherings, Osmani stressed the unique perspectives and insights they bring. He highlighted the increased collaboration and career advancement opportunities resulting from diverse backgrounds coming together.
Dr. Osmani’s achievement in securing this travel grant not only recognizes his scholarly pursuits but also underscores the importance of diversity and inclusivity in academic and professional circles.
