When graduating with a bachelor’s in computer science from ULM in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had rendered the computer science job market dry. However, despite this challenge, Maharjan secured a position at LSU Health. This opportunity became a stepping stone for him, leading to a master’s degree in computer science technology from LSUS this past spring.
Drawing on his classroom knowledge and experience as an app developer at LSU Health, Maharjan secured a coveted role as an app developer at the esteemed Office of Clinical Informatics at the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
“My focus now is on creating apps to aid medical researchers,” Maharjan expressed, affiliated with one of the nation’s premier medical research centers. “My initial love for computers led me here, but I discovered later on that developing this software can truly enhance lives and society as a whole.
“One of the pivotal reasons I chose (MICHR) is the direct impact my work has on their research. I aim to make a difference and enhance people’s health.”
Maharjan’s fascination with computers ignited in Nepal during his early education, sparking his journey into the realm of computer language. His decision to move to the U.S. stemmed from the pursuit of quality education and an adventurous spirit.
“Securing an international scholarship was a significant aid as education in the U.S. is costly,” Maharjan revealed. “ULM and later LSUS provided affordable education. Here in the U.S., I see boundless opportunities for personal and professional growth.”
His time at LSUS proved transformative, with Maharjan attributing his growth to the challenging coursework and supportive professors.
“LSUS played an instrumental role,” Maharjan emphasized, having spent about a month working in Michigan. “I completed my master’s within a year, facing immense pressure, but the constructive pressure fueled growth.
“I was part of a team that developed an e-commerce app (Pilot Hub) and a comprehensive website in faculty member Keyvan Shahrdar’s class. It demanded a vast reservoir of knowledge, executed within tight time constraints. The guidance and resources from professors were invaluable, nurturing skills that made me an attractive candidate in the job market.”
Shahrdar, teaching a software engineering project class, stressed the importance of experiential learning in computer science.
“Our program places significant emphasis on comprehensive projects, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical application,” Shahrdar explained. “These projects simulate a professional environment, enabling students to confront the intricacies and challenges of software development within an educational framework.
“Through these projects, students acquire hands-on experience in coding, teamwork, and project management—essential skills in the tech industry.”
Among Maharjan’s credentials is his proficiency as a full-stack Java developer, capable of coding across all layers of web-based applications.
“Understanding all three layers is crucial,” Maharjan asserted. “Without a comprehensive grasp, the holistic view remains incomplete.
“Employers typically seek developers proficient in all three layers.”
At LSU Health, Maharjan honed his skills, primarily crafting applications for internal use.
“For instance, we developed a mobile app for the physical therapy department, facilitating the creation of campus events,” Maharjan detailed. “The ability to create and witness instant results fascinated me from the start.
“That was a significant attraction.”
Shahrdar highlighted Maharjan’s evolution from an adept individual programmer to a pivotal team player, amplifying his value in the professional sphere.
“Rohan’s journey within our program has been exceptional,” Shahrdar commended. “His profound understanding of programming concepts, coupled with a thirst for learning and adaptability in team environments, set him apart.
“His rapid grasp of complex ideas and effective application within team projects is remarkable. His dedication, combined with the skills honed in our program, undoubtedly contributed to his successful placement in Michigan, affirming the efficacy of our educational approach.”
