On an eventful Friday night for local high school football teams, surprises got the headlines and overshadowed continuing trends.
Haughton’s first loss, at previously winless Natchitoches Central, was undeniably a shocker. Woodlawn’s first win of the season, at Bossier (3-6, 1-4 in District 1-4A), was more than a mild surprise.
Parkway (5-4, 3-2) outpunched a one-win Byrd team (1-8, 1-4), with the usual stars from both sides posting impressive stats.
Panthers’ receiver Gary Burney collected 163 receiving yards on seven catches, including touchdowns of 48 and 34 yards that bookended Parkway’s scoring. Teammate Damien Dacaldacal rang up 165 rushing yards on 19 carries with a pair of scores, and quarterback Bryston McCoy showed no signs of a wrist injury from a week ago as he threw for 269 yards and three TDs.
Byrd’s Christian Maxie had his ninth career 200-yard rushing output, and the third straight, with 264 yards on 29 carries, moving within 20 yards of the 26-year-old school single-season rushing record (1,845).
After combining to score 84 points in three quarters, the teams didn’t dent the scoreboard in the final period.
Calvary (8-1, 3-0 in District 1-2A) played with a running clock for the eighth time in nine games and won its 73rd straight district contest, dominating winless Magnolia School of Excellence (0-9, 0-3) as Hudson Price threw three touchdowns on his seven passes. Z’Ryan Miles scored on his only carry, a 35-yard run, while Braylun Hughlon got one touch and housed it on a 90-yard reception.
North DeSoto (9-0, 5-0) remained unbeaten, but for the second time in three years, Booker T. Washington (6-3, 3-2) pushed 1-4A’s seemingly perennial champion to the Griffins’ tightest district game of the season.
Northwood (5-4, 4-1) started the slate Thursday night by posting its fourth straight win by at least 30 points.
