Byrd’s comeback win over Evangel and Green Oaks’ stumble at Homer were the biggest surprises in Friday night’s local high school football competition.
In the eighth week of regular season play, Huntington opened the schedule Thursday night rallying past Captain Shreve.
Christian Maxie scored on two long fourth-quarter runs Friday night as previously winless Byrd prevailed in a wild fourth quarter to hand Evangel its first District 1-5A loss. Green Oaks’ offense didn’t ignite while Homer used a pair of 20-point halves to ruin the Giants’ unbeaten record.
Previously undefeated Calvary could not get on track offensively in its trip to New Orleans to face Class 4A power Archbishop Shaw. The Cavaliers didn’t score in double digits for the first time since the third week of the 2022 season, a 14-7 loss to Byrd, ending a string of 57 games with at least 14 points.
Benton’s Malachi Zeigler made the difference in overtime, scoring on a 10-yard game-winner on the first play after Ryder Dodson intercepted a Natchitoches Central pass to blunt a 14-point rally by the Chiefs that forged a 35-all tie.
