Corporal Anthony Haines and Sergeant Jonathan Varnell of the Shreveport Police Department recently completed a 40-hour HAZMAT Awareness and Operations Certification Course at JSTEC-LSP as part of their work with the department’s DART Unit.

The officers are among the department’s personnel who respond when hazardous materials are involved.

With Interstate 20 and Interstate 49 running through Shreveport, trucks carrying hazardous materials travel through the city daily. Specialized training is used when there is a crash, spill, leak or other hazardous-material incident.

The Shreveport Police Department said being prepared for unexpected incidents is part of protecting the city.
