Shreveport Man Sentenced to Life for Shooting Lifelong Friend More Than 20 Times

Dewayne Wilkinson, 23, of Shreveport, was sentenced Monday to a mandatory life term at hard labor for the 2023 murder of Laroyce Daniel Brown, his lifelong friend and god-cousin. During the incident, Wilkinson armed himself with a Blackout-style rifle and shot Brown more than 20 times before fleeing the scene. Wilkinson’s own mother and sisters called 911, identifying him as the shooter. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Kodie K. Smith and William Edwards.
Haughton Family in Washington Fighting to Free Son Held in Chinese Prison

The family of Nelson Wells Jr. of Haughton traveled to Washington, D.C. on Monday to continue their more than decade-long fight to secure their son’s release from a Chinese prison. Wells Jr. has been jailed in China for years and has developed serious medical issues, according to his family. His parents — Cynthia Wells and Nelson Wells Sr. — have been appealing to U.S. officials and the Trump administration for intervention on humanitarian grounds. The family is asking for prayers and public support as they continue their advocacy.
Shreveport Voter Registration Drives Continue Today at Library Branches

Today is the fourth day of Shreve Memorial Library’s voter registration drive across Caddo Parish, running through Friday, Sept. 25 in partnership with the Caddo Parish Registrar of Voters. Today’s sessions are at the Wallette Branch, 363 Hearne Ave.; Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, 2105 Hollywood Ave.; and Cedar Grove-Line Avenue Branch, 8303 Line Ave. Residents can register to vote or update their address. Bring proof of age, residency, and identity. Tomorrow’s final sessions, Sept. 25, will be held at Atkins Branch, 3704 Greenwood Road; Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop; and Broadmoor Branch, 1212 Captain Shreve Drive.
