Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith presented the department’s monthly crime statistics to the Shreveport City Council.

Smith highlighted continued declines in sex crimes, robberies, vehicle thefts, vehicle burglaries, residential burglaries and shootings.

While homicides remain above last year’s total, the Shreveport Police Department has achieved an approximately 70% homicide clearance rate in 2026, compared to a national average of roughly 55%.

Fatal crashes remain a concern. Caddo Parish leads Louisiana in traffic fatalities, with Shreveport accounting for a significant portion of those numbers. Thirty-one people have been killed in crashes within the city this year.

Suspected impairment involving either a driver or pedestrian was a factor in 10 crashes, while 10 crashes involved pedestrians in the roadway.

Smith urged drivers and pedestrians to remain alert, use caution and never drink and drive.

Smith also recognized the Shreveport Police Department’s DWI Unit, which has made more than 400 DWI arrests in 2026 and is on pace for another record-setting year.
