While power points determine state playoff qualification in LHSAA sports, district play has value, and it starts this week for 10 of the 19 local football teams.
District championships don’t add to the LHSAA power point rankings but the prestige of winning a title is obvious, and each win along the way bolsters the power point total.
There are three District 1-5A games this week: Parkway at Huntington, Captain Shreve at unbeaten Haughton and Benton at Evangel. Last week’s Evangel win over Huntington was not one of the six designated 1-5A contests this season.
In District 1-4A, Minden comes to Bossier, North DeSoto travels to meet Woodlawn, and Booker T. Washington squares off with Southwood.
A couple of games pit teams that are no longer in the same district. Loyola dropped down to Class 3A and will visit longtime District 1-4A rival Northwood. Calvary goes to Farmerville to play Union Parish, which is winless with a new coaching staff against a challenging early schedule.
Two 1-5A teams continue their demanding non-district schedules with appealing matchups. Texas power Pleasant Grove visits to play Byrd, and Airline hosts Franklin Parish, ranked sixth in Class 4A.
