There’s plenty of high school football being played locally tonight – and Saturday afternoon.

Benton, Calvary, Evangel, Haughton, Loyola, Parkway, and Southwood are all at home tonight. The Week 3 slate wraps up Saturday afternoon at 5 when Green Oaks visits Booker T. Washington in the 53rd Annual Soul Bowl at Leonard C. Barnes Stadium.

A matchup of District 1-5A foes pits schools six miles apart when Huntington goes to Evangel. Both teams are 0-2 against very challenging schedules. Eagles quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston is 66 shy of 9,000 career passing yards.

The other local collision tonight happens in Benton, when the Tigers (1-1) welcome Woodlawn’s Knights (0-2) in the first meeting this decade between the programs.

Loyola will mark the 50th anniversary of the Flyers’ 1976 unbeaten Class 2A state championship team when Class A power St. Edmund (2-0) comes up from Eunice tonight. This year’s Loyola team (1-1) is ranked eighth in the state Class 3A Top 10 and is two points away from a sweep of 1-5A foes Captain Shreve and Parkway.

Calvary ascended to the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A this week and comes home to play Grant, which features explosive senior running back Aymaud Sykes – who scored 10 touchdowns and ran for 420 yards against Montgomery last season. He was clocked in 4.29 in the 40-yard dash at a summer camp.

In Campti, Magnolia School of Excellence tries to halt a 20-game skid that is now the state’s second longest when it visits Lakeview (1-1). The Gators ended their 28-game streak last week with a 35-0 victory at Plain Dealing.
