Caddo and Bossier Mark 25th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

Twenty-five years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Caddo and Bossier parishes are pausing today to honor the memory of the nearly 3,000 lives lost. Bossier Parish Schools held three remembrance ceremonies this morning — at Airline High School at 8 a.m., at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home at 10:30 a.m., and at a third location featuring an unveiling of a section of steel from the World Trade Center’s South Tower. Shreveport and Bossier City police and fire departments, along with the Caddo and Bossier parish sheriff’s offices, are coordinating a joint first responders remembrance ceremony. Bossier Parish Community College is hosting a commemorative program at noon in the Stephen W. Slaughter Performing Arts Theatre on its East Texas Street campus. The public is invited to attend any of today’s events to honor those lost and the first responders who answered the call.

Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies explained from a hospital room their decision not to arrest or administer sobriety testing to State Rep. Michael Melerine after his SUV ended up in a ditch off Overton Brooks Road in Caddo Parish. CPSO deputies said Melerine exhibited signs of a medical emergency rather than intoxication at the scene, and that their protocols direct them to prioritize medical care in such situations. Melerine’s attorney has confirmed he had just come from a legislative committee meeting in Baton Rouge before the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Shreveport Police Add Officers to Target Impaired Drivers

Following 10 DWI arrests over the Labor Day weekend, the Shreveport Police Department is adding officers to its traffic enforcement division specifically targeting impaired driving across the city. With the November 3 election less than eight weeks away, supporters of the Caddo Parish $60 million sports complex bond proposition are ramping up public outreach and voter education efforts. The facility, proposed for a site near Interstate 20 and Interstate 49 in Shreveport, would feature basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts along with a family entertainment center. Bond debt would be repaid through the parish’s existing 1.5-mill property tax with no new taxes required. Opponents, including the Caddo Parish Republican Party, continue to raise fiscal concerns.
