The second week of high school football doesn’t include any games designated as classics, but it includes some matchups that could turn out to fit that description.

For the third straight week, Evangel will take on a Monroe-area power. After getting blown out in the Bayou Jam by Class 5A’s top team, Ruston, and faltering in the fourth quarter last Friday in a 42-32 loss to West Monroe, the Eagles are finally at home when they play Neville Friday night.

Loyola-Parkway was already an attractive contest, but interest spiked after the Flyers outpaced Captain Shreve last Friday.

It’s not a designated District 1-5A game this time around, but Airline goes to Byrd with the Lee Hedges Stadium scoreboard sure to get a test. Booker T. Washington at Benton and Southwood at Haughton are appealing pairings between local teams.

Noteworthy: Plain Dealing hosts Lakeview Friday night. The Lions are hoping to shirk the state’s longest active losing streak, 45, and have what looks to be a prime opportunity against the Gators, who are third on the skid list with 28 consecutive losses.
