Haughton’s Haylee Crowder and Parkway’s Aubrey Snell stood out on Centenary scorecards Tuesday as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championships wrapped up in Westworth Village, Texas.
Crowder, a sophomore, tied for ninth place at 20-over par 200. She earned honorable mention All-SCAC honors with her fourth career top-10 finish.
The Gents shot a 54-over par 774 to finish ninth at Hawks Creek Golf Club. The final round was shortened to nine holes due to rain. Senior Jeffrey Borchert shot a 6-over par 186 to tie for 19th place and lead the Gents.
Snell, a junior, earned a top 25 finish. He shot an 8-over 188 to tie for 23rd.
The Ladies finished fifth at 124-over par 844 as freshman Gracie Evans tied for 16th place at 27-over par 207.
BASEBALL: The Diamond Gents (18-19, 13-14 SCAC) conclude their regular season this weekend at home against the University of the Ozarks Eagles (12-25, 6-21 SCAC) with the series opener set for Thursday at 7 at Shehee Stadium.
Game 2 is tentatively scheduled for noon on Friday and Game 3 at 1 o’clock on Saturday. Friday and Saturday’s start times could be changed due to weather.
The Diamond Gents are currently in a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference standings and are fighting for a berth into the SCAC Championship set for April 30-May 3 in Cleburne, Texas. The double-elimination tournament will feature six teams.
FOOTBALL: Coach Byron Dawson has added a couple offensive assistants to his staff. Katerrio Pennywell Sr. has joined the Centenary football staff as the offensive line coach/run game specialist. Keith Barefield is the new offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
Pennywell, an Alexandria native, was a member of Grambling State University’s 2011 SWAC championship team. He joined the Bolton High School staff in 2020 as the offensive line coach and was promoted to head coach for the 2021 season after being with the program for a few months.
Pennywell played offensive line for the Tigers under Keith Wagner (TCU) and Ben Wilkerson (LSU 2004 Remington Trophy Winner). His head coaches during his stint at Grambling were Rod Broadway and Doug Williams (Super Bowl XXII MVP). Pennywell graduated from Peabody Magnet where he was all-district, All-Cenla, and all-state as an offensive lineman.
Barefield comes to Centenary from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., where he served as offensive coordinator from 2023-25. Barefield orchestrated one of the most explosive attacks in the country. Last season the Rams finished ranked third in the state of Georgia and 13th nationally.
He came to Grayson after being an offensive assistant at Southland Conference member Incarnate Word in 2022, where the Cardinals led the nation in scoring at 51.5 points per game and ranked second nationally in total offense (581.2 yards per game), produced 60 passing touchdowns, and advanced to the FCS semifinals. UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott won the Walter Payton Award which is given to the FCS player of the year.
In 2020, Barefield was an analyst at Louisiana-Lafayette under Billy Napier as the Ragin’ Cajuns were Sun Belt champions. For the 2019 season Barefield was the offensive coordinator at Quincy University (DII). He coached receivers in 2018 at Central Arkansas (FCS) after serving as the pass game coordinator in 2017 at his alma mater Northwestern Oklahoma State (DII).
From 2013-2016 is when Barefield got his start as play caller. He joined his father and head coach, Keith Barefield Sr., to help launch a program from scratch serving as the offensive coordinator at Southeastern University (NAIA) in Lakeland, Fla. After a year of no competition, SEU’s offense posted three straight seasons of averaging 44+ points per game, won two conference championships, and had the conference MVP for three consecutive years.
As a high school freshman and sophomore, Barefield attended and played for Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport where Dawson was on staff.
