BAYTOWN, Texas – It was a far cry from the 29-point loss Bossier Parish Community College basketball team took from Angelina 17 days ago.
Instead, the Cavaliers threw a big scare into their opponents in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament Tuesday night, taking a lead into the closing minutes but falling 69-62 to the Roadrunners.
Wrapping up his first season at BPCC, coach Jeff Moore lauded the competitiveness of his squad, which has 11 freshmen among its 15 players.
“I am very proud of the fight in this group,” he said. “Things weren’t going our way in the first half which led to us being down 13 at halftime.
“We settled down and battled back to take an eight-point lead with five minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, Angelina made the plays and we struggled late which resulted in a tough loss.”
Last month in Lufkin, the Cavaliers shot a sub-freezing rate and were lashed 62-33 by Angelina. Shooting was a difference Tuesday night, as the ‘Runners hit 47 percent from the floor to 40 percent by BPCC. The winners also had a 35-27 rebounding advantage.
Four BPCC players scored in double digits: freshmen Tony Montgomery (17), Zequan Lewis (15), Dustin Welch (11) and sophomore Mazin Lumori (12). Montgomery added six rebounds and five assists.
“This has been a great group of young men to coach,” said Moore, a longtime assistant to former BPCC coach Mike McConathy at Northwestern State. “They always responded to challenges and have represented BPCC, our program, themselves, and their families in a first-class manner.”
The Cavs finished with an 11-20 record.
