R.W. Norton Art Gallery announces changes to botanical garden gate access

The R.W. Norton Art Gallery has announced upcoming changes to public access hours for its Botanical Garden in response to an increase in safety concerns and confrontational encounters on the property.

Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, several garden gates will operate on revised schedules. The Thora Boulevard gate and the south walk-through gates will continue to open at sunrise Wednesday through Sunday but will now close at 3 p.m. instead of sunset. The Huron Street gate will open at sunrise Wednesday through Friday and close at 3 p.m. on those days, remaining closed throughout the weekend. The Creswell gate will maintain its current operating hours without change.

Gallery officials emphasized that the museum and gardens are privately owned and operated by the R.W. Norton Art Foundation and do not receive public funding, utilities, or services. While admission to the museum and gardens has remained free for more than 60 years, access to the property is granted at the discretion of the foundation.

Visitors are being reminded to follow posted rules and to interact respectfully with staff, law enforcement personnel, and other guests. Gallery officials stated that confrontational behavior will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the property or arrest.

Signage outlining the new gate hours and access rules will be posted at each entrance prior to the changes taking effect.
