Only three of the 14 games involving local high school football teams last weekend came down to the closing minutes.

The other 11 had an average margin of 41 points.

Driving an incredible 17 plays without its starting running backs due to injuries, Byrd took the lead on Trenton Henderson’s 3-yard run with 2:28 to go at Turpin Stadium, but Natchitoches Central responded by going 80 yards in seven snaps and scoring a game-winning 15-yard TD run by quarterback Owen Smith with 1:21 left for a 35-31 triumph.

Airline held off a fierce effort from Haughton for a 36-28 win in another District 1-5A nailbiter. The Bucs were within 22-21 at halftime, but the Vikings got touchdown runs from D.J. Allen and Kenny Darby for a 15-point lead. The Bucs closed late on Taylor Weathersby’s 61-yard strike to Brandon Craig and made a bid to tie the game in the closing seconds. Weathersby threw for 354 yards and three TDs.

Green Oaks continued to show toughness, bowing 22-14 to Homer in a hard-fought 1-2A contest.

Although it came in a 48-14 loss. Bossier sophomore quarterback Montrevell Lewis recorded a milestone Friday night against 1-4A power Northwood.

Lewis became the first local player documented in 21 years to post 1,000 yards passing and rushing in the regular season. He ran for 141 yards and both Bearkat touchdowns, including a 45-yarder, and threw for 151 yards. He topped the 1,000 mark in both categories during the game.

Northwood got two rushing touchdowns from Kyran Johnson and John Sneed, while Nathan Cervantes threw for a pair of scores. The Falcons led 34-7 at halftime.

Parkway built a 30-7 lead over Huntington and was not seriously threatened late in its 1-5A victory over the Raiders.
