The second-year Centenary football team fell 55-27 to the preseason favorite in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, on Saturday night in the league opener for both teams at Atkins Field.
The Gents (0-4, 0-1 SCAC) fell behind 17-0 and 20-6 at halftime, rallied within 34-27 going to the fourth quarter, but couldn’t stop the Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0), who won going away by scoring 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points.
TLU ran for 329 yards, threw for 184 more, and had possession for 37 of the 60 minutes while running 87 plays to 59 for the Gents.
Centenary had 398 total yards (239 passing by Vance Feuerbacher) and got 127 receiving yards from Theo Dunn and a 159-yard rushing performance on 15 carries by Obidiah Butler.
Feuerbacher completed 23 of 34 throws and tossed three touchdown passes – 26 yards to Dunn getting the Gents on the board 42 seconds before halftime, 17 to Dunn to open the third quarter and 21 yards to Christopher Jackson late in the period.
Butler raced 95 yards midway through the third for the other Centenary TD.
