Four games remain in the prep football regular season with plenty to be decided in the next month.
With statement wins last week, Evangel (5-1, 5-0) and Parkway (6-0, 4-0) have emerged as the two unbeaten teams in District 1-5A. If they stay that way, they collide in Week 10, but the district landscape is tricky.
Loyola is unbeaten in six starts – the first three against Class A opponents – and will not meet the other top District 1-4A teams, undefeated and LSWA Class 4A No. 1-ranked North DeSoto along with 5-1 Northwood until the final two weeks.
Southwood just notched its first 1-4A win this decade, topping Woodlawn. The Cowboys are 3-3 after shedding a 46-game skid.
While Calvary (5-1, 3-0) is marching along in 1-2A, extending its win streak to 68 straight in district, the Cavs have their toughest league foe, Union Parish, visiting this week and square off against explosive Huntington next week in an interesting non-district matchup.
Green Oaks rebounded from having to forfeit its Soul Bowl win over Booker T. Washington and rolled on the road over Bastrop. Nick Peoples’ first Giants’ squad might be trouble for the second-tier teams in 1-2A.
Last weekend’s local slate of games also included Benton’s second straight win in a wild one at Haughton despite a 208-yard, 18-catch performance by the Bucs’ Ethan Johnson — the state’s leading receiver — and Huntington (3-3, 3-2) holding off Byrd as Raiders’ receiver Nate Green threw an 80-yard TD pass on the first play and later caught a 43-yard scoring strike from Justin Whitaker.
