Unbeaten Parkway begins today all alone atop District 1-5A. Tonight, either Evangel or visiting Captain Shreve will join the Panthers with a perfect league slate, and will actually sit a half-game ahead.
Parkway (6-0, 4-0) outlasted Airline 48-43 Thursday night, beating the Vikings for the first time in five seasons. Evangel and Shreve enter tonight’s showdown at Rodney Duron Stadium with 4-0 marks in 1-5A.
The Eagles and Gators will stage a rematch of the record-shattering 77-76 Shreve overtime win exactly a year ago. Evangel quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston broke the national single-game high school pass yardage record, throwing for 817 yards on 53 of 68 aim with eight touchdown passes. He also ran for 102 yards and two more TDs.
It was Houston’s first season of high school football. It was the first season for Shreve’s Jamarcea Plater to play running back and on the way to an All-State campaign, he ran for 352 yards and 4 scores on just 19 carries and added 87 receiving yards against the Eagles. Plater also blocked an extra point that became pivotal in regulation.
The teams met again in a first-round playoff game, won 58-48 by Evangel, capped by a pick six TD in the waning moments by All-State linebacker Damari “Dae Dae” Drake.
Along with Parkway’s win Thursday night, in other noteworthy outcomes, Loyola moved to 6-0 by bouncing Bossier, Benton won its second in a row, prevailing at Haughton, Huntington scored on a double pass on the first play and outpaced Byrd, and Northwood rolled at Booker T. Washington in a game marred by two altercations involving multiple players from both teams.
