Gunfire near school sparks swift response, ends in arrest of two armed suspects

Walter Houston and Omarion Shepherd

On the afternoon of Sept. 19, at approximately 1:30pm, Shreveport Police Department officers were present at Booker T. Washington High School on an unrelated matter when they heard a series of
gunshots nearby.

Recognizing the potential threat, officers quickly coordinated with a Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy who was also on campus. A lockdown of the school was immediately initiated to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Once the campus was secured, additional patrol units were dispatched to the area, as the sound of gunfire continued.

Through a joint effort between Shreveport Police and the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, two individuals—identified as Walter Houston (DOB: 01/21/1991) and Omarion Shepherd (DOB: 01/24/2005)—were located walking near 2030 Looney Street. Two firearms were found nearby, close to the path the suspects had taken.

Following further investigation by the SPD Violent Crimes Unit, it was determined that both individuals had been firing weapons in the backyard of the residence at 2030 Looney Street. The location falls within a firearm-free zone due to its proximity to the high school.

Houston and Shepherd were both arrested and charged with Illegal Use of a Weapon and Violation of the Firearm-Free Zone Statute.

No injuries were reported. The coordinated and timely response between law enforcement agencies helped bring the situation under control quickly and safely.

A dangerous situation was brought under control. A school was kept safe. And two armed suspects were
taken off the streets—because the right people were in the right place at the right time.
