Several appealing matchups as nine locals host Week 3 games

Rivalries certainly can be friendly. Case in point: the District 1-5A battle coming Thursday in Bossier City between early league co-leaders Haughton and Parkway.

For several years, it was the “Brotherton Bowl” with siblings Jason Brotherton (Haughton) and Coy Brotherton (Parkway) as opposing head coaches.

Now it’s billed as the “BFF Bowl” with Coy Brotherton and close pal Matthew Sewell on opposite sidelines. They’ll have their regular Wednesday night dinner together with their families, then go at it for 48 minutes (maybe more, as the Buccaneers beat Byrd in overtime last Friday), and as Sewell said Monday, probably ride together Friday night to scout a future district opponent or two.

That matchup is a highlight of the local Week 3 high school slate, along with a clash of explosive unbeatens Friday night (Mansfield at Northwood), the LSWA’s top-ranked 4A team (Franklin Parish) visiting 2A’s sixth-ranked Calvary Baptist on Friday, and one of the best local rivalries, the 52nd annual Soul Bowl Saturday at 5 between Booker T. Washington and Green Oaks.
