Just over two months after Centenary basketball coach Chris Dorsey resigned, later to be announced as associate head coach at Grambling, the Gents are expected to announce his replacement Monday.
It’s been a longer-than-intended search for Dorsey’s replacement. When announcing Dorsey’s departure May 8, athletics director David Orr said he hoped to have a new coach hired “early this summer” and said a search committee was already reviewing candidates.
Orr and other Centenary Athletics officials were unavailable for comment Thursday, but an announcement of the new coach will apparently be made Monday.
Dorsey spent eight seasons steering the Gents’ program. He had seven straight winning seasons until this winter, the first time in his tenure Centenary did not reach the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The 2023-24 season was the high point, with Centenary winning the SCAC Tournament in the Gold Dome and reaching the NCAA Division III Tournament to cap a 17-win season, the second straight for the program.
Dorsey finished his Centenary run with an overall 108-91 record and a nifty 69-53 mark in SCAC play. His teams were noted for tough defense and running an efficient Princeton-style offense that earned Dorsey national respect.
He steered the Gents to their first conference championship in over 40 years in 2020, and the second SCAC title in 2024 made him the only coach in program history with multiple championships. His teams reached five consecutive SCAC Final Fours and played in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2020 and 2024.
Under his leadership, Centenary produced at least one all-conference player every season — 25 total — along with one SCAC Player of the Year and two SCAC Rookies of the Year. His teams posted a dominant 76 percent home winning rate from 2020–2024 (51–16), and he engineered two of the longest winning streaks in school history (10 games each). Dorsey was named SCAC Coach of the Year in 2020.
