Officers with the Shreveport Police Department’s Youth Services Bureau were contacted by SPD Patrol officers after responding to a call on April 2 at the Royal Inn, located at 1906 N. Market Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 15-year-old female who had reportedly been left alone and unsupervised in a hotel room for approximately two weeks.
Officers described the juvenile’s living conditions as deplorable and noted she had a strong odor indicating poor hygiene. The child informed officers that her mother, identified as Angela Herring (DOB: 05/30/1974), had left the hotel over a week prior, stating “I love you, be back soon,” and had not returned since. The teen apologized for her appearance and said she had not bathed in two weeks but had managed to find food on her own.
When asked about her father, identified as Carey Herring (DOB: 11/24/1972), the juvenile stated he had been banned from the property and had not been seen since. This was confirmed by hotel management, who advised that Mr. Herring had been removed and barred from the premises on or about March 19.
The child further disclosed that she had not attended school in approximately three years.
Child Protective Services (CPS) was immediately notified, and an emergency Gingerbread assessment and
drug screening were conducted. On April 2 detectives with the Youth Services Bureau obtained arrest
warrants for both Angela and Carey Herring on charges of Improper Supervision of a Juvenile and Criminal Neglect of Family.
Both individuals were taken into custody shortly thereafter and are currently booked at the Caddo Correctional Center. This incident remains under investigation.
