Suspect shot during early morning vehicle burglary, second suspect at large

Shreveport Police patrol officers responded to a 911 call in the 7600 block of University Drive on Saturday, April 5, at approximately 3:30am. The caller reported seeing two masked individuals breaking into vehicles on the street and stealing a car parked at a nearby residence. According to the caller, one of the suspects noticed him making the emergency call and began approaching.

Fearing for his and his family’s safety, the caller discharged his firearm twice, striking 18-year-old Jamelvion Lewis in the upper body.

When officers arrived, they immediately began rendering aid to Lewis. During the response, officers discovered that Lewis was armed with a firearm, which was later confirmed to have been reported stolen out of Bossier City through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

The second suspect fled the area in the stolen vehicle but abandoned it a short distance away before
escaping on foot. He remains at large.

The 911 caller surrendered his firearm and fully cooperated with investigators. Witnesses at the scene were transported to the Violent Crimes Unit for recorded interviews.

Lewis was transported by the Shreveport Fire Department to Ochsner LSU Health with life-threatening
injuries. His condition has since been upgraded to critical but stable, and doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery. Violent Crimes detectives believe Lewis and at least one other individual are responsible for a series of crimes in the area, including at least five vehicle burglaries, one firearm theft, and one motor vehicle theft.

Lewis has been charged with one count of Possession of a Stolen Firearm. Additional charges are expected.

At this time, there are no charges pending against the 911 caller.
