The Shreveport City Council, led by Chairwoman Tabatha Taylor and Vice Chairwoman Ursula Bowman, proudly announces two upcoming initiatives in honor of Women’s History Month.
These events aim to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women, both locally and globally, while engaging the community in meaningful dialogue about their impact.
Students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in an Essay Writing Competition that challenges them to reflect on the role of women in their lives and history.
Participants can choose from two themes:
1. The Power of Role Models – Writing about a woman who has personally inspired them.
2. Unsung Heroines – Highlighting a woman in history who has made a significant impact.
Essays should be no longer than 300 words and will be judged on originality, clarity, structure, and relevance to the theme.
Submissions are due by Friday, Feb. 28, at 5pm and should be emailed to RJ.Johnson@ShreveportLA.gov with the subject line “Essay Contest.”
Winners will be recognized at the March 11 Shreveport City Council Chamber Pink Out Event, during a press conference at 2pm, followed by a Council Recognition Ceremony at 3pm.
The second initiative is Pink Out the Council Chamber: Honoring Women Who Lead The Shreveport City Council. The Council invites the community to wear pink and join the celebration of Women’s History Month on March 11.
The event will highlight the achievements of women who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations. The public is encouraged to attend and show support for women’s leadership, strength, and resilience.
