Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) was honored to celebrate Black History Month at Booker T. Washington High School, recognizing the theme “Celebrating Black Military Excellence.”
Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, SUSLA Chancellor, proudly joined the BTW JROTC in paying tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and legacy of Black servicemen and women who have shaped this nation’s history. Their dedication and leadership continue to inspire future generations.
A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Judge Carl E. Stewart of Shreveport, Louisiana. Judge Stewart, who began his term as Chief Judge of the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2012, has had a distinguished career in the judiciary. Appointed to the Fifth Circuit in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, he made history as the first African-American to serve as the court’s chief judge. Before his tenure on the Fifth Circuit, Judge Stewart served as a district judge in Louisiana’s First Judicial District Court and later on the Louisiana Second Circuit Court of Appeals. His inspiring words resonated with all in attendance, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, leadership, and service.
SUSLA remains committed to supporting local schools and students, particularly those enrolled in its high school dual enrollment programs. The university continues to foster educational partnerships that enhance student success and create opportunities for academic and professional growth.
SUSLA thanked BTW High School and JROTC for an incredible event highlighting the strength and excellence of Black military heroes. For those interested in supporting Booker T. Washington High School’s JROTC program, contact the BTW JROTC at 318-222-2186.
