GRAMBLNG – For the second straight season, the Grambling women’s basketball team has notched a triple-digit win.
This time, it was close to home.
Grambling scored 91 points in the first half Monday night in its season opener, which counted as an exhibition outing for Division III Centenary. The Lady Tigers took it easy afterward and drifted through the last 20 minutes to record a 131-30 decision at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Last Jan. 2, under then first-year coach Courtney Simmons, Grambling hammered Houston-based College of Biblical Studies 151-18, earning national attention, not all of it positive. The Lady Tigers went on to a 23-10 record that included a WNIT first-round win at Oral Roberts.
Monday night, the score was 91-9 at halftime, including a run of 41 straight points in the first quarter as Grambling used fast-paced, full-court pressure that left Centenary scrambling all game long.
Twelve Lady Tigers played between 12 and 22 minutes. Seven scored in double figures, led by Kahia Warmsley, who made all 10 of her shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a 24-point outing in 13 minutes of court time.
Grambling scored 66 points off 41 Centenary turnovers. The five non-starters for the Lady Tigers scored a combined 70 points.
After halftime, Grambling did not use a pressing defense and played a more deliberate style offensively.
