ALEXANDRIA – Byrd shot a 7-under 281 to take the team honors at the LHSAA Division I, Region 1 golf tournament Monday at OakWing Golf Club with Benton finishing 12 strokes back in second.
The Yellow Jackets were led by junior James Holtzclaw, who claimed medalist honors by shooting a 5-under 67. He was joined by teammates Brooks Reid and Grant Reagan, tied for seventh individually with 71s. Shep Smith was a stroke behind at 72 and Campbell Gosslee had a 75.
Benton finished 12 strokes behind Byrd with a team total of 293. Individually for the Tigers, Kade Bryant tied for second carding a 4-under 68. Cason Toms tied for fifth, shooting 70 and Miller Davis tied for 10th with a 73.
Byrd and Benton qualified for next week’s state tournament to be played April 29-30 at The Wetlands in Lafayette. The Yellow Jackets have won the last two state championships with the Tigers finishing three strokes behind them last year.
