When I say the game of basketball is unpredictable … well, that is basically the only way you can describe it in Shreveport-Bossier. Just when you think one thing is going to happen, it doesn’t!! But hey, the Shreveport-Bossier Journal Prep Hoops report is here to sift through it. The girls’ regular season will be winding down Saturday and the boys have one more week to go. Can we get a little more madness? Of course we can!!
District 1-2A Tournament champs
Chan Hearron has done practically everything a varsity coach can do for Calvary Baptist basketball. He coached the varsity boys to the playoffs during his tenure and now he has coached the varsity girls to a district championship. That’s right!
The Calvary Lady Cavs, winners of 8 in a row I might add, clinched the District 1-2A title by beating Loyola this past Saturday in the district tournament final. With the season ending this Saturday, Calvary looks as if it will be hosting a home playoff game next week as a 14 seed. For a program that had just five players a couple of years ago, this is a great accomplishment. Salute to Coach Hearron for the job he has done.
Topsy turvy district
“It was all good just a week ago…” That classic Jay-Z line fits the boys District 1-4A picture perfectly. Last week BTW had a half-game lead with two home games on the horizon, looking as if they may win the district. Now, two losses by the Lions later, Huntington is in the driver’s seat to win yet another crown. The district champion will come down to the Huntington-Bossier game once again. A Bearkat win and we may end up with a three-way tie for first if Evangel wins out. A Raiders win will give them the title. In a season that looked like this district would not come down to the winner of the Huntington-Bossier game, it will come down to just that. Friday night at 7:30 at Bossier High — get your popcorn ready.
Almost left for dead
At one point in time, Parkway was a top 10 team in Non-Select Division I. Then, district play began. The Panthers commenced to lose 7 of their first 9 games and slid to the low 20s (27th to be exact) in the power rankings. Oh, what a difference two games make, though. Beating Airline and Benton now have the Panthers seating at No. 23. They have an away game with Haughton on the horizon and finish up with Natchitoches Central and Shreve. Winning two out of the three would get them a trip down south and a more favorable matchup. Let’s see what the cat the Panthers can pull out of their bag.
Possible playoff pairings
With the season ending for the ladies on Saturday, let’s see who our teams from Shreveport-Bossier may be playing in the first round.
Non-Select Division I – Parkway will possibly host Ouachita, Haughton possibly gets East St. John, Benton likely travels to Chalmette, and Airline is possibly going to Zachary.
Select Division I – Northwood possibly hosts Alexandria (ASH), Southwood looks to be travelling to L.W. Higgins, and Captain Shreve faces a possible trip to Warren Easton. Southwood could very well host this same team because they are separated by fractions of a point. Huntington would have a first-round bye.
Select Division II – BTW’s Lady Lions may hit the road to Baton Rouge (Red Stick) to face Istrouma.
Select Division III – Calvary may host Cohen while Loyola will hit the road and possibly play Northlake Christian.
District 1-2A Boys Tournament
The District 1-2A semifinals and finals will be played at Calvary Thursday and Friday. Top seed and Division III Select sixth-ranked Calvary will host North Caddo in one semi while Green Oaks and Loyola will play in the other. A Loyola win will more than likely give it the last spot in the playoffs. This would be a good way to cap a difficult season for the Flyers.
We will look at capping the boys regular season and delve into the girls playoffs next week right here in the Shreveport-Bossier Prep Hoops Report.
