Eight girls, four boys teams remain in soccer playoffs

NO PROBLEMS: Captain Shreve dominated its first-round girls soccer playoff contest as Ryleigh Cram (4) headed the ball towards the goal with Maddie Aubrey (2) and Bryleigh Burlison (19) ready to score. Slidell’s Emma Pippenger (31) and Natalia Dufrene (15) hoped to clear the ball out. (Submitted photo)

JOURNAL SPORTS

Higher-seeded local girls soccer teams picked up expected wins Friday in the first-round of the LHSAA playoffs, however it wasn’t so rosy for boys teams as only two locals managed to move forward.

In girls’ playoffs, Captain Shreve in Division I, Parkway and North DeSoto in Division II and Evangel in Division IV all picked up shutout wins. Shreve, the No. 3-seeded team, took down No. 30 Slidell 7-0. No. 6 North DeSoto got an 8-0 romp over New Orleans Military & Maritime and No. 9 Parkway was a 5-0 winner over Liberty. Evangel, a No. 8 seed, defeated Houma Christian 8-0.

Haughton and Calvary were the only boys teams to survive the first round of games played Friday and Saturday. The No. 12 Bucs took a 3-1 win over AJ Ellender in Division II on Saturday and the No. 18 Cavs upset No. 15 Rapides 3-1 in Alexandria on Friday.

Second-round playoff games begin Tuesday and just three of the eight remaining girls teams will be playing locally — Caddo Magnet and North DeSoto in Division II and Loyola in Division IV.

Three of the four boys teams left will be at home. Bossier hosts Sterlington Tuesday and Loyola (versus Ouachita Christian) and Calvary (versus Episcopal Acadiana) play at home Wednesday.
