The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and Louisiana State Police (LSP) have issued a reminder to motorists about the ongoing prohibition of large commercial motor vehicles in the I-20 construction zone in Bossier City. Recent incidents involving 18-wheelers have led to closures of portions of I-20, exacerbating traffic congestion in the already reduced one-lane rehabilitation zone from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive.
These closures, lasting several hours, are a result of the extensive operations needed to clear the affected areas, impacting both traffic flow and construction progress. Since the inception of the major reconstruction project in September 2023, DOTD and LSP have consistently urged motorists and truck drivers to use the primary detour of I-220.
In December 2023, a decision was made to enforce a prohibition on large commercial motor vehicles within the work zone. This measure, implemented during phase 2 of construction, involved the installation of concrete barriers and narrower bridge crossings. The primary goal is to enhance the safety of all motorists and facilitate uninterrupted progress on the project.
Despite numerous signs informing drivers of the truck prohibition on I-20 and the recommended use of the I-220 detour, LSP has issued over 200 warnings and citations to drivers who have disregarded these regulations. All drivers are reminded to stay vigilant regarding changing traffic conditions in construction zones. Eliminate distractions, maintain a safe following distance, never drive while intoxicated, and adhere to posted speed limits for a safer and smoother travel experience.
