BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Centenary football team will take the field one final time in its exhibition season today as the Gents will face the Lyon College Scots at 2 p.m. inside Pioneer Stadium.
The Gents (7-1) have been extremely successful this season, outscoring the opposition 348-103, and recorded three shutouts. Centenary opened the season with seven straight wins, most against junior varsity teams, before falling 56-23 to the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes last Saturday in Little Rock.
Lyon College (4-4) is winner of two games in a row and is 2-1 at home this season.
Centenary finished a grueling stretch in which the Gentlemen played three games in a span of 18 days. The team had just four days in between last Saturday’s game and their previous game, a 28-0 shutout over the Texas Lutheran University JV squad on Oct. 30 in Fort Worth, Texas.
“Lyon College is a well-coached team with talented players at every position,” said Centenary head coach Byron Dawson.
“We must be totally focused on executing the game plan and bringing our A-game on Saturday,” said Dawson. “Saturday’s game will be our third road game in the last 13 days and is significant because it is our season finale.”
The Gents have played this fall in exhibition mode with their scrimmages and games not counting as official in the record books. That changes next fall as Centenary will kick off football as an intercollegiate sport for the first time since 1941.
