Calvary finally takes top spot after Airline stumbles

JOURNAL STAFF

Calvary has piled up some big wins that have kept the Cavaliers on the heels of Airline in the Shreveport-Bossier Journal Top 10 football poll, so when the Vikings stumbled at home to Captain Shreve Friday night, it figured that CBA would move into the No. 1 spot.

Last week, the Cavs had two of six first-place votes. Earlier, they spent a week tied at the top with Airline. Now, they’re unanimously No. 1, the first time in the poll’s two-year history that a program not from District 1-5A heads the poll of SBJ journalists.

The Cavaliers began their District 1-2A schedule Friday night with a convincing 70-0 defeat of North Caddo, leading 56-0 at halftime, to move to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district.

Captain Shreve surprised many with a 60-35 defeat of Airline to hand the Vikings their first loss of the season and first in the last 12 regular season games. The Gators, 5-1 overall whose only loss was to Calvary, move into the poll’s No. 2 spot. Airline drops to No. 3.

The Gators scored the game’s last 18 points, 11 in the last six minutes, to halt Airline’s unbeaten run.

Parkway (5-1) got another shutout from its defense in a 45-0 win over Southwood and is No. 4 in the poll.

District 1-4A foes Evangel (4-2) and Huntington (4-2) fill the No. 5 and 6 spots. The Eagles got a big win defeating Northwood 41-22, in a four-quarter-competitive contest. The Falcons (2-4) drop a spot tp No. 9. Huntington staved off a challenge from Booker T. Washington 40-22.

Byrd (2-4) garnered its second straight win, a 31-28 nail-biter at Haughton (3-3), to move up two places to No. 7, one above the the Bucs.

Woodlawn (3-3) remained at No. 10 despite losing to North DeSoto, 57-12.

Benton (2-4) and Loyola (2-3) received votes after wins. The Tigers got a late touchdown to get past Natchitoches Central 42-35 and the Flyers started 1-2A play with a 42-6 win over Green Oaks.
