October 26, 1946 – July 1, 2023

Shawney Ray West, 76, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Saturday, July 1, 2023 surrounded by his family.

He was born October 26, 1946 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to Sarah and Jack West.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Ellerbe Road Methodist Church, 10130 Ellerbe Church Road, Shreveport, Louisiana, where Pastor John M. Korlaske will officiate. A reception will follow.

Shawney grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and graduated from Sapulpa High School where he was an accomplished athlete in football, wrestling, and track. He also attended the University of Tulsa. He met his future wife Janis West in Louisville, Kentucky while working together at Sunoco in 1973. They were married for 48 years. Shawney enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the three Ford Mustangs he owned throughout his life. He enjoyed all the opportunities life had to offer. He cherished and attended Ellerbe Road United Methodist Church, being a part of the Methodist Men’s Group, and assisting with their fundraisers. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality.

Shawney was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Mont and Fred; two sisters, Barbara and Mary Jo; and two daughters, Natalie and Julie. He is survived by his wife; sons, Shawney Jr. and Nicholas, and wife, Carrie; sisters, Jackie and Evelyn; brothers, Kenny and Scott; as well as numerous grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ellerbe Road Methodist Church General Fund, 10130 Ellerbe Church Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71106.

The family would like to give special thanks to his caregiver, Dennis Johnson, the doctors, and nursing staff at Willis-Knighton Pierremont, and Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals.
