District standings don’t always mirror where teams will be placed in the LHSAA playoff brackets with power ratings used to determine the placement and the very competitive District 1-5A baseball loop is the perfect example.
First-place Benton (8-2) is currently the No. 19 rated team in Non-Select Division I with Haughton (4-6) rated No. 11, No. 12 Parkway (6-4) and No. 16 Natchitoches Central (4-6) above the Tigers in the ratings. Select Division I ratings have Captain Shreve (5-4) rated No. 4 and Byrd (5-5) rated No. 11. Airline, 7-3 in the district, is the second-place team but is rated No. 24 in Non-Select Division I. The top 26 teams in Non-Select make the playoffs.
Another round of district games begin today because of the rains last Thursday and Friday. Haughton will play at Byrd and Parkway at Airline in make-up games. In District 1-4A, last Wednesday’s key district game between North DeSoto (21-5, 5-0) and Northwood (20-6, 5-0) will resume at Northwood on Tuesday with the Griffins leading 7-5 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Playoff brackets are due to be set April 18 by the LHSAA.
