Shreve Memorial Library Children’s Book Festival May 7

Shreve Memorial Library is inviting children of all ages to celebrate Children’s Book Week now through May 7. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literary initiative in the country and encourages young readers to celebrate the joy of reading. Recognized annually during the first week of May, the Children’s Book Week celebration will take place May 2 through May 7 at Shreve Memorial Library, culminating with the Shreve Memorial Library Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, May 7. All programs, including the festival, are free to attend and open to the public.

Children’s Book Week, sponsored by Every Child a Reader, will celebrate its 103rd anniversary in 2022. The annual event, celebrated in the spring and the fall, encourages young people across the country to participate in literary events at schools, libraries, bookstores and at home, and to engage with book creators both online and in person. This year’s theme, “How Do You Book?” challenges young readers to explore what they read, how they read, and where they read.

Shreve Memorial Library branches will hold a variety of programs and activities for Children’s Book Week. Storytime programs, featuring the works of Brenda Maier and Jennifer L. Holm will take place at branches throughout Caddo Parish. In addition, several library branches will host movie screenings of R.L. Stine and Kwame Mbalia inspired films as well as craft programs inspired by children’s books and authors. Storytime programs are scheduled at the David Raines, Belcher-Wyche, Broadmoor, Hamilton/South Caddo, Cedar Grove-Line Avenue, North Caddo and North Shreveport branches. Movie screenings will take place at the Belcher-Wyche, Mooretown and West Shreveport Branches, while craft programs will be available at the Atkins and Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch. Please visit http://www.shreve-lib.org for program details, dates, times and locations.
