Tolbert, Anderson lead Haughton to first-round playoff win

PLAYOFF GEM: Haughton pitcher Austin Anderson pitched a 3-hit shutout to lift the Bucs to a first-round playoff win Tuesday.

Roman Tolbert hit a 2-run home run and Austin Anderson made that hold up with a shutout as Haughton defeated Southside 3-0 in the first round of the Class 5A baseball playoffs at Haughton

Anderson (9-1) retired the last six Southside batters of the game in pitching a complete game three-hitter, walking none and striking out 11 for Haughton, now 27-6.

Tolbert’s blast came in the first inning and followed an Anderson single that drove in Colin Rains with the Bucs’ first run. Rains had led off the inning with a single to right field for Haughton, the No. 6 seed.

Rains had a double and one other single for three hits in the game along with Anderson, who had three singles. Parker Lowrie also had a double among his two hits in the game for Haughton.

Haughton will host No. 11 seed Central-Baton Rouge in the regional round in a best-of-3 series this weekend. Central (26-7) advanced with a 7-1 defeat of Alexandria Senior High.

PARKWAY 11, H.L. BOURGEOIS 7: The Panthers survived what became a score-fest with the visiting Braves by outscoring them 6-3 in the final 2 ½ innings. Parkway (22-12) was cruising along with a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth inning when HLB scored four runs to cut the lead to 5-4. The Panthers responded with 3-run fifth and sixth innings to ward off an upset. Tanner Kirkland and Trent Lape both had three hits that included a double and Zach Schoenborn singled and tripled and drove in three runs for Parkway.

ZACHARY 12, CAPTAIN SHREVE 2: The Gators fell despite a big day at the plate from Blake Fant, who had three hits and accounted for both of Shreve’s runs with a 2-run homer in the fifth inning. The No. 7 Broncos had 10 hits in the game and improved to 23-12 on the season. Captain Shreve ended its season at 16-19.

NORTHWOOD 19, LAGRANGE 0: At Northwood, the Falcons pounded out 14 hits led by Ryan Gardner’s four hits while  two pitchers limited the visiting Gators to four hits and struck out 10 in the first-round Class 4A playoff win. Jack Carlisle got the win pitching four innings, allowing three hits, one walk and fanning eight. Jacob Murray pitched one inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Gardner, Hayden Phipps and Hutson Hearron all had doubles, Tucker McCabe delivered three singles and Jaxon Bentzler and Brendan Burns both had three RBI for Northwood (27-8), who scored 15 runs in the fourth inning.
