A little rain wasn’t about to stop the Division III Region 1 golf tournament at The Golf Club at Stonebridge on Monday. And no amount of rain was going to hinder the Loyola boys’ golf team in their quest for a regional title.
The Flyers swept through the event, grabbing the regional title and finishing 22 shots ahead of their closest competitors. Loyola took first place with a team total of 295, followed by Notre Dame (317), Sterlington and D’Arbonne Woods (tied for third with 372), Holy Savior Menard (399) and Avoyelles PC (564).
“I thought we played well today with the tough conditions,” said Loyola coach Eric Ricard. “I know that we can clean up a few shots with better course management and that is the goal for next week.”
Charlie Bell and Holden Webb of Loyola both shot 72 to lead the tournament, followed by teammates Jack Gilmer (75), Ross Alford (76) and Connor Cassano (77).
“It played tough out there today,” said Bell. “I was happy to grind out a good round today to get some momentum for state.”
The Division III state tournament will be held at The Wetlands in Lafayette on May 2-3.
The only other players to shoot in the 70’s were Notre Dame’s Blake Francis (76), Thomas Gattle (77) and Joshua Faulk (79).
“We had a solid day today,” said Webb, “and are looking forward to next Monday and Tuesday.”
