Loyola road trip more than about basketball

Loyola boys basketball coach Ben Schonfarber was on a chartered bus Wednesday, headed for Baton Rouge for the Flyers’ Division II playoff game with University Lab, when he had to head back home.

Schonfarber didn’t figure there would be any way his pregnant wife would go into labor when he left Shreveport but he was wrong. Informed two hours into the bus ride, the Loyola coach’s dad was riding behind the bus and brought him back while the Flyer basketball team continued on to their game.

The 15th seed Flyers fought hard Wednesday night before falling the the No. 2 seeded Cubs 62-44 at the Pennington McKernan Gymnasium.

Jacob Lafitte scored 9 of his team-high 12 points for Loyola in the first half as the Flyers trailed 32-20 at the break. John Carmody Jr. was next for LCP with 9 points and three 3-point makes beyond the arc and Tray Taylor scored six of his 8 points in the second half.

Zaren James scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the first half for University Lab.

Loyola finished its season at 13-18 and University moves on with a 19-5 record.

BYRD 58, ST. AUGUSTINE 57: The Yellow Jackets, a No. 9 seed in Division I, made the trek to New Orleans to face the No. 8 seed Purple Knights and came away with the narrow victory. Byrd evened its record at 14-14 and will have to go back on the road Friday for a date with No. 1 seed St. Paul’s (25-4).
