Benton, Bossier, Caddo Magnet boys into LHSAA soccer quarters

The Bossier Bearkats gathered after their convincing playoff victory Saturday

Bossier used a hat trick from Yoani Reyes to defeat Haynes Academy 5-0 Saturday in a boys Division III soccer match at Bossier Stadium, making the Bearkats one of three local boys teams advancing to the state quarterfinals in weekend action.

Benton and Caddo Magnet also charged forward, standing among the eight remaining squads in their LHSAA brackets.

In an extremely fast game that had Bossier controlling the majority of the possession, the fourth-seeded Bearkats got a goal from Marquis Harris to go with Reyes’ three. David Rojas and Felix Deras each had two assists and keeper Marco Rodriguez had seven saves.

Bossier scored the first three goals on Haynes defensive errors. In the third minute, Deras passed to Reyes, who took the shot from just inside the box. A Haynes defender tried to deflect it and ended up misdirecting it away from their keeper and in the goal. With the ball headed to the net, Reyes was credited for the goal.

At the halfway point in the first half, the ball was at the feet of Rony Carcamo out wide. He crossed the ball and unfortunately for Haynes the ball deflected off a defender and into the goal. It was scored an own goal as the ball was not headed for the net when shot.

A few minutes later, a Haynes defender made a drop pass to the keeper, in an attempt to clear the ball, and the keeper whiffed it. Deras quickly passed to Harris, who tapped it in the goal for a 3-0 lead.

The final two goals were both passes from Rojas to Reyes.

Bossier plays its quarterfinal match at 12th seeded North Vermillion Wednesday at 5:30 pm.

In the only local match of local playoff teams, Friday night, fifth-seeded Caddo Magnet held off 21st seed Haughton 3-1.

The Mustangs got goals from Jonathan Woldie (penalty kick), Xan Walker and Jakyran Pierson. Thomas Kamberov and Woldie provided the assists and keeper Mark De Leon had 5 saves.

Magnet was up 3-0 when its lone goal against came with 10 minutes left. The Mustangs travel to No. 4 Neville for their quarterfinal match Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In Saturday’s Division II action, No. 6 Benton dominated No. 22 Lakeshore 8-1.

Logan Smith had four goals, Ethan Bihler added two and RJ Moore and Buzz Bording had one each. Smith and Moore also had a pair of assists and Chase Clutter and Aidan Bonar had one apiece. Goalkeeper Joseph Corsino had five saves.

Benton’s quarterfinal match against third seed East Jefferson is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie.

Division I No. 11 Byrd fell at No. 6 Sulphur 3-2. Garrett Gullett scored first and Andrew Stuart had the assist for the Yellow Jackets. Stuart scored the second goal on a rocket from distance. Michael Hameui had six saves, with two being huge ones.

Division III No. 14 Loyola’s season ended in a 6-1 loss at reigning state champion and fourth-seeded Lusher Charter. Loyola got its goal from Patrick Gooszen, assisted by Van Van Norman. Freshman keeper Hudson Moore had 10 saves.

In Division I, No. 13 Captain Shreve lost at No. 4 Alexandria 5-1. Division II’s eighth-seeded Parkway lost 3-1 to Ouachita Parish in a game played at Airline High School.
