With descriptions like, “simple but sensational” and “like mom used to make it,” Ferrier’s Rollin’ in the Dough is unassuming, but in the best possible way. Even the restaurant’s slogan is “Great food, not fast food.”
All the above statements are true. Rollin’ in the Dough offers up great food in a laid back environment. This bakeshop opened in 1997, but it showcases the building’s history proudly with an old photo from 1963 hanging in the dining area.
Robby Ferrier and his wife Katherine, Shreveport natives, originally opened the restaurant as a bakery, but soon realized other food items needed to be introduced. A window wall opens the dining area up to the back-of-house production area. The whole atmosphere makes you feel right at home.
It’s always important to try the burger and the shirts the staff wear state that it’s the bun that makes the burger great. So true! The buns are fantastic and yes, you can buy a few or a few dozen to take home with you. They work great for breakfast sandwiches or a simple PB&J.
A shrimp po-boy served on crusty French bread was fried golden perfection, as were the fries. A lot of people are very particular about their fries and these were a 10 out of 10. Even choosing a simpler meal of creamy mac & cheese with a ham sandwich, you can’t go wrong.
Kids meals with cheeseburger, catfish, chicken fingers, grilled cheese and mac & cheese are served with fries and a beverage for the very reasonable price of $4.99 or 5.99.
Now the food is good, but the star of the show is the Casino Cake. Never having even remotely heard of one of these sweet concoctions before there were of course many questions for the staff. A Casino Cake is a square of Devil’s food cake with a dollop of buttercream icing on top, which is then dunked in chocolate for a good solid coating. It may be Devil’s food cake, but this dessert is heaven in your mouth! And don’t forget it’s made from scratch!
P.S. So are the chocolate chip cookies and don’t forget to check out the specials board because the Fire Steak Wrap and the BBQ Brisket sandwich sounded amazing!
A fellow Northwestern State Demon fan, recognized by the T-shirt she was wearing, is a regular at Rollin’ in the Dough and recommended the fried catfish, which she swore is the best in town. A return visit is in order to try the farm raised Mississippi catfish breaded in seasoned cornmeal and fried crispy. They even make their own tartar sauce and the catfish meals are available in three sizes depending on how hungry you are!
