It seems like every time I am on social media looking at places to feature in this weekly “In Search of Good Food” series, Mae & Co., 1023 Provenance Place, Shreveport, seems to make an appearance, so I’ve had this place on my list for a while.

It’s just a long way from south Bossier to the Southern Loop, so I knew I needed a day when not a lot was going on for me. This past Saturday left me with the afternoon free. I invited my daughter and son-in-law to join me — of course that always includes my five-month-old granddaughter, a win-win, right?

We got there a little before 3 p.m. which allowed us to order either off the regular menu or the brunch menu, and we tried a little of both.

I had an appetizer that I can truly say was one of, if not the best, appetizers I have ever had: the Crab Queso Pretzel. It was that good. It’s a Lobster Bisque Queso and lump crabmeat over a house-made pretzel. The pretzel was not too hard on the outside and not too soft on the inside. The star was the lobster bisque queso and crabmeat, which was incredible, and I promise you my plate was cleaned off so well it looked like it was washed.

My hope is the chef sees this article, reaches out to me and tells me how I can get a pint, quart or maybe a gallon of it. I’d be in heaven.

I ordered Beignets & Berries. The beignets were very good, and the roasted berries added a nice layer of sweet flavor to the dish. There wasn’t any of those berries left on the plate either. I even felt like I was eating healthy. Fruit is healthy, isn’t it?

My daughter had the Chicken and Beignets. She enjoyed the beignets as much as I did and the chicken was fried to a nice golden brown, with great flavor.

My son-in-law decided on the wings. He went for a dozen and added fries. He was pretty quiet during dinner, which is a sign he’s loving his food. I tried a garlic parmesan wing, which had the right amount of crunchy outside and juicy inside, with great flavor. The fries were well cooked and had a combination of salt and pepper seasoning that made you quickly reach for more.

The bread pudding looked so good, I really wanted to try it. I was just too full to enjoy it, so I skipped it this once. I will be back to try it, after another Crab Queso Pretzel, that is.
